During these difficult economic times  local Jimmy John’s sub shops offered a grand bargain for lunch September 22nd; 8-inch long subs for $1.

The two Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwich shops; one at Centerplace and one on 11th Ave, ran the special deal Thursday from 11-3 p.m.

The $1 subs were offered to celebrate  “Customer Appreciation Day.” The promotion ran at all Jimmy John’s restaurants in the Denver area market.

Mary Trader, public relations director, said the company could not provide the Gazette with specific information on the sales in order to keep the information from competitors. Trader said the shops have offered the promotions before and they have always been a huge success. “Even though Customer Appreciation Day is still going on, I can tell you it has already been a huge success. Every time we do this our customers appreciate it.”

Tammy George, general manager for the Jimmy John’s on 11th Ave., said  the number of people that showed up was surprising. “We had a great day, everyone had fun and we saw a lot of people that we haven’t seen before.” George continued, “We did have more people that showed up than the last time.”

George said they always try to have a friendly competition with the other store. “We were tied or real close to it yesterday.”

While there were lines, the employees were able to get customers through the lines fairly quickly with the sub preparers operating the line using a fast assembly line approach.

The promotion was limited to one sandwich per customer, however, several individuals thought the sandwiches were such a good bargain that they went through both shops multiple times.

In addition to offering sandwiches for $1, the restaurants continued to conduct other business.  “We also did our catering and our usual daily business in addition to the $1 subs. It was all pretty exciting.”

Jimmy John’s calls its sandwiches “freaky fast, freaky good.” The chain was founded in 1983 by 19-year old Jimmy John Liautaud in Charleston, Ill. in a converted garage.

While the company prides itself on its fresh ingredients stating that the vegetables, cheese and meats are sliced fresh in-house every day, for many customers, the favorite part of the sandwich is the bread.

“Everybody says they love our bread. It’s the special ingredients we put into it.” George said.
