Saturday marked the second of the Republican Party’s major statewide election events. County assemblies were held across Colorado to nominate candidates for state house and senate offices as well as conducting a host of other party business.
In Weld County, delegates voted on 17 resolutions which, if adopted, are submitted to the state assembly for consideration to be forwarded to the national convention in hopes of becoming a plank in the party platform on which the presidential candidate is expected to stand. In contrast to the streamlined slate in Weld County, Larimer County delegates voted on a long list of 50 resolutions.
Nearly every county assembly in Colorado had some common resolutions. Perhaps the number one on every list was a call to support a balanced federal budget. Stronger and narrower enforcement of the Constitution is also high on the wish list of Colorado republicans. Other popular resolutions included gun rights, border enforcement, support for the military, and photo identification for voting registration.
Both Weld and Larimer assemblies voted on support of a ‘Fair Tax” in favor of abolishing the IRS and the progressive income tax. Larimer’s list also included some controversial wording about birth control for welfare recipients that seemed to endorse sterilization as a requirement for some benefits. Results of the resolution votes will be posted on county GOP websites.
Selected delegates now move on to state and congressional district assemblies in April to adopt and endorse additional candidates and resolutions before the national convention delegation goes to Tampa, Florida.
