During a fundraiser, Vice President Joe Biden said that “Republicans have changed the law so you get arrested if you do vote.”
The Weekly Standard reported the remarks were made at a Democratic fundraiser in Seattle for Washington senator Maria Cantwell.
In an attempt to diffuse the issue a pool report said Biden was “apparently joking.”
However, the report notes that Biden went on to list actual examples to back up his statements that the GOP wants to jail voters.
The pool report said:
Recalling a story that Cantwell had told as she was introducing him about crying as a little girl because she thought one of her neighbors had said she wasn’t going to vote and Cantwell feared she would be arrested, Biden said it wasn’t much different today. “Republicans have changed the law so you get arrested if you do vote,” he said, apparently joking. He cited efforts in Pennsylvania, Ohio and elsewhere “to essentially try to intimidate people, taking people off the roles.”
“This is not your father’s Republican Party,” he said.
This is not the first time that Biden has accused Republicans of being racists. Under the Obama administration, the number have Americans on Food Stamps has gone up dramatically.
During the Republican presidential primary, Biden took the candidates to task for opposing the president’s agenda.
Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, I think they’re slightly different, and I mean this sincerely. I think it’s more about obstructionism for them. For them, their actions say what they really believe.”
“These are the same guys who are calling the president a ‘food stamp president’ – a thinly veiled, I don’t know what it is, but it’s inappropriate. It’s inappropriate.”
Biden appeared to have been referencing other Republican critics who stated that Gingrich calling Obama a “food stamp president” was a thinly veiled derogatory reference to black people on food stamps.
Gingrich denied the comment had anything to do with race, saying he was pointing to the record numbers of people receiving food stamps during Obama’s presidency.
However, Biden has had his own problems with racist gaffes. During the 2008 campaign he praised Obama for being a black who was “articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”
