Greeley, CO – Bells at The Salvation Army’s red kettles are set to begin ringing Thursday, November 15, signaling the official start to the holiday fundraising season for the organization. Local Army officials are appealing to Greeley residents to give a bit more than spare change this year. “It’s really a great way to celebrate the season of giving, and helps the Salvation Army provide the gift of hope to those most in need in our community, not just at Christmastime but throughout the year” says Gina Smith, Kettle Coordinator for the Greeley Salvation Army.
The organization, which has been serving Greeley since 1889, needs to register nearly 300 volunteers to help make this upcoming season a success. With the help of volunteers, The Salvation Army hopes to reach its 2012 red kettle fundraising goal of $250,000.
Signing up to help is simple. By calling 970.346.1661, individuals and groups can select a shift(s) and location convenient for them. Standard shifts can take place anytime Monday thru Saturday between 10:30 am and 7:00 pm. “We would love to see our volunteers give four hours out of their day to help their neighbors in need by ringing a bell and assisting in our largest fundraiser of the year” says Smith.
The kettles, first used on a pier in San Francisco, CA in 1891 to collect funds to feed the hungry, have become a familiar part of the Christmas scene in communities across the United States. Donations at the kettle enable this Army to continue to meet the needs of the disadvantaged at Christmas and throughout the year. Funds are used in part to support year ‘round programs of The Salvation Army including Family Emergency Services to provide food and emergency assistance to families; Daily Feeding Program which provides two hot meals and a bagged dinner to community members in need; Hygiene kits and clothing vouchers, and a new parent assistance for diapers, car seats, and other infant necessities.
