One of the central claims of communism is that is exists to look out for the people and prevent them from being exploited by the ruling class. However, it seems that does not apply when these same masses want to be able to choose what the state defines as a valid marriage.
People’s World, a news site associated with the Communist Party USA praised a ruling by Federal U.S. District Court Judge Terence Kern who struck down a state constitutional amendment passed by the people of the state declaring the state would only recognize marriages that were between a man and a woman.
The People’s World said “many LGBT and equality activists received a big but gleeful surprise when U.S. District Court Judge Terence C. Kern ruled the Oklahoma state amendment limiting marriage as a ‘union of one man and one woman’ unconstitutional at the federal level.”
The story went on to say the ruling will hopefully be a step to repealing all such laws in other states.
What is often misunderstood is that none of the so-called “marriage amendments” actually prohibit same-sex marriage in any state. Rather the amendments or legislation simply states what types of relationships the state will recognize. There is nothing in the language that would prohibit a same-sex couple from having some type of ceremony pronouncing them married.
It is similar to a state with colleges that are unaccredited. The state may not recognize the credits of student who transfer to a state college or university from an unaccredited college, but the state still allows these colleges to operate.
Ironically, when the issue of a federal constitutional marriage amendment defining marriage as being between a man and woman was proposed, same-sex proponents said it should be decided by the states. However, now that they have been able to get “gay” marriage legalized in some states they are now claiming that states do not have the right to define marriage.
The praise for Kern’s ruling is not the first time the Communist Party USA has supported a position on a social issue taken by President Barack Obama.
During the debate over the so-called “fiscal cliff” at the end of 2012, the CPUSA backed the president’s position, saying Obama’s economic policy is exactly what the country needed.
Following Obama’s reelection, the CPUSA called it “an enormous people’s victory.”
The comment was in a report to the Communist Party USA National Committee from the party’s chairman, Sam Webb.
“We meet on the heels of an enormous people’s victory. It was a long and bitterly contested battle in which the forces of inclusive democracy came out on top. The better angels of the American people spread their wings,” Webb wrote in the online report.
He said blacks, Hispanics and women worked together to defeat “racist … white people” and that it now is time for the Communist Party USA to work on the foundations established by Obama on issues regarding the environment, homosexual marriage and minorities.
