John W. Itken of Greeley, 86, died Friday, October 8, 2010 at Bonell Good Samaritan Center. He was born February 21, 1924 in Hopkins Township, Illinois to John William Frederick and Helene Amanda (Lauts) Itken. He grew up on a farm and attended North Star School.
John married Betty Schmiedebush on February 16, 1947 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hopkins Township. He and Betty raised three daughters in Rock Falls, Illinois. They moved to Colorado in 1993 to be closer to their daughters, and John retired from being a mechanic. After retirement, he kept busy repairing lawn mowers and bicycles at their home in Evans. In 2009 they moved into Bonell Retirement Community. He was a member of Gloria Christi Lutheran Church in Greeley.
He is survived by his wife Betty Itken of Greeley; daughters Joyce Beck (Greg) and Jane Woodard of Greeley and Joan Herring (J.P.) of Loveland; sister Helen Collins of Kewanee, IL; grandchildren Laurel Beck (Jeff Shattock) of Aurora, Jacob Beck (Melissa) and great-grandchild Lila of Brighton. He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers Lawrence, Harold and Lester Itken.
Visitation 1-2 p.m. Wednesday followed by funeral service at Gloria Christi Lutheran Church. Interment Sunset Memorial Gardens.
